About Equilin, Annette's passion and 'the New Food'

Let food be your medicine and your medicine be your food.' Doctors used to swear this oath to Hippocrates, the founder of Western medicine. This becomes apparent when we start feeding horses and ponies according to their natural minimum roughage needs. Then there are far fewer problems. If we zoom in even further on the diet, it will become apparent that many more problems are influenced or caused by an inappropriate ration.

Who is Drs Annette van Weezel Errens

As a ‘turner of the equestrian sector’, Annette, veterinary and horse lover, won the HIP award in 2019 for her concept of ‘the New Feeding’ and her commitment to horse welfare.

As a child, Annette was already a big animal lover and grew up with a special passion for horses. From that love and the desire to better understand animals and to be able to work with animals in a professional manner, she started her veterinary medicine studies. During her studies she worked as a groom at various sports stables. Here she became acquainted with the large amounts of supplements and other remedies that riders and veterinarians gave to their horses.

During the veterinary training, the passion for the animal remained, but more and more doubts arose about the secondary interests that are interwoven in regular veterinary medicine. This was the reason for her not to graduate as a veterinarian, but to graduate in 2004 with a free study of veterinary medicine after a number of victories over university resistances. Her graduation topic was animal ethics and ‘doping in equestrian sport’.

Because of the research she did in this area during her studies and the jungle of supplements she was confronted with during her work as a groom, she understood that things had to be done differently. Annette couldn’t see the wood for the trees, let alone the gullible horse owner. In addition, Annette believed that when horses are too stressed and do not receive enough nutrients, veterinary and behavioral problems are waiting. Thus began the search for a positive contribution to improving the horse’s life.

Vision on the natural nutritional needs of the horse

She started to investigate what a horse really needs for a healthy body. According to her, the feed management of horses, as it was in all books, was outdated and a major change was needed to provide horses with their natural needs from the diet. Moreover, Annette found out that there was no product on the market that met all her requirements. She decided not to sit back and be part of this change herself. In 2008 she founded Equilin and from there started developing products that match her vision.

In 2018, her vision of the doubled roughage standard was endorsed internationally. This was adopted as a welfare standard for the equine industry. A horse needs at least 1.5% of its body weight in roughage in dry matter to feel satisfied and to keep its body healthy. They naturally eat even more roughage.

Annette calls this ‘the New Feeding’: an innovative, refreshing view on feed management, in which roughage is central
