Who is Drs Annette van Weezel Errens
As a ‘turner of the equestrian sector’, Annette, veterinary and horse lover, won the HIP award in 2019 for her concept of ‘the New Feeding’ and her commitment to horse welfare.
As a child, Annette was already a big animal lover and grew up with a special passion for horses. From that love and the desire to better understand animals and to be able to work with animals in a professional manner, she started her veterinary medicine studies. During her studies she worked as a groom at various sports stables. Here she became acquainted with the large amounts of supplements and other remedies that riders and veterinarians gave to their horses.
During the veterinary training, the passion for the animal remained, but more and more doubts arose about the secondary interests that are interwoven in regular veterinary medicine. This was the reason for her not to graduate as a veterinarian, but to graduate in 2004 with a free study of veterinary medicine after a number of victories over university resistances. Her graduation topic was animal ethics and ‘doping in equestrian sport’.
Because of the research she did in this area during her studies and the jungle of supplements she was confronted with during her work as a groom, she understood that things had to be done differently. Annette couldn’t see the wood for the trees, let alone the gullible horse owner. In addition, Annette believed that when horses are too stressed and do not receive enough nutrients, veterinary and behavioral problems are waiting. Thus began the search for a positive contribution to improving the horse’s life.
