Health & Rehabilitation

'The New Feeding', back to the horse's natural roughage needs, where a healthy horse starts with a healthy intestinal flora. And that is where things often go wrong with our average roughage, whether or not supplemented with kilos of concentrate.

Giving a handful because your horse no longer does any work seems logical but is not wise. Right now, sufficient vitamins and minerals in the ration and a good intestinal flora are important!

How to deal with an injury?

Your horse is injured and needs to take it easy for a while or even keep box rest completely. Very annoying and especially for your horse that much prefers to be in motion with peers. It is now important that your horse continues to feel ‘happy’.

Boredom is lurking and so is overfeeding with energy. It is now important that your horse does not get too much energy, but that the low-sugar roughage is ‘tasty’. The digestion must also continue to run smoothly and your horse has an increased need for good nutrients for recovery. So enough challenges!

Risks of being overweight?

Even if your horse is injured or too fat, the minimum roughage requirement remains 1.5% of the body weight in DS (dry matter) of fiber/roughage to keep the body healthy and experience less stress. Feeding much more is not advisable given the risks of being overweight. Slow feeders can help to eat the roughage more slowly. And looking for a poorer batch of roughage to (partially) supplement is also a good idea.

Wet fibers are recommended to stimulate the intestinal muscles, such as beet pulp, bran and ‘light’ slobber. Too much straw and grass seed hay is not a good idea as it is largely not digested by the gut bacteria and can also cause blockages.

Advantages of ‘the New Feeding’ for a rehabilitating horse, the BASICs;

  • They balance the intestinal flora.
  • Antibiotics are sometimes necessary, but this is often at the expense of the good bacteria in the intestinal flora, extra attention / correction for this is desirable.
  • Omega 3 (DHA), vitamin E, magnesium ensure a more relaxed and less stressed horse. The COMFORT can also stimulate this even more.
  • The essential amino acids ensure the maintenance of the muscles without putting an extra burden on the liver.

The BALANCERs ensure that your horse or pony receives enough easily absorbable vitamins and minerals so that the immune system can do its job.
