It is high time for 'the New Feeding Concept'. Right now! This is why.
The one-sided, high-energy diet of the modern horse in combination with an oftentimes unnatural stable management leads to many problems. This is obvious if you look at the high number of horses suffering from all kinds of health problems, such as colic, stomach ulcers and stereotypic behavior.
Ten years ago, the standard amount of roughage for horses per day was 1 kg of hay per 100 kg of body weight. For the horse to obtain sufficient nutrients, horse owners had to supplement with a lot of concentrate. In the last couple of years, various scientific studies have shown that this standard is outdated. But this is not all; it has also been found to be one of the causes of many of the health problems mentioned above!
Doubled roughage standard
Instead of the 1 kg of hay per 100 kg of body weight, it’s been discovered that horses need at least 1.5% of the body weight in DM (dry matter) in fiber / roughage. That is 2 kg of hay per 100 kg of body weight.
The statistics confirm that many health problems can be prevented when the amount of roughage fed to the horse is doubled.
Healthier feeding management
These new insights have changed the general idea of how to keep a horse healthy. "The New Feeding Concept" is therefore nothing more than a new, healthier feeding system that responds to the latest insights with regard to horse nutrition and health.
A horse needs twice as much roughage than previously assumed. This means that, if a horse actually eats the necessary amount of roughage, the intake of sugar and protein is also doubled. This sheds new light on feeding concentrates, which in many cases becomes superfluous and, in some cases, even harmful.
However, roughage does not contain all the necessary nutrients. In most cases, easily absorbable minerals are missing from the daily menu, as well as vitamin E, which is usually also not sufficiently present in dried roughage. The intestinal flora is also a point of attention and can be better balanced by adding pre- and probiotics to the diet, so that the roughage offered can also be properly digested.
All necessary nutrients in one pellet
"The New Feeding Concept" provides insight into nutrition. It takes into account the differences between horses and what they need. This way you can easily put together a suitable diet for each horse with only a small number of products.
By combining all necessary nutrients in one pellet, big amounts of concentrates, grains and supplements will be a thing of the past. Thus, you will bring your horse in tip top condition, in addition to saving time and money.
For example, if your horse has access to sufficient suitable roughage, you can keep your sport horse healthy and let it perform well with the products of Equilin®, only adding a maximum of 1 to 2 kg of concentrate. Recreational horses often don’t even need concentrate on top of the supplements. Older horses or horses with problems can also get most to all of their nutrition from roughage supplemented with Equilin® products.
In practice, for example, in some cases it might be necessary to supplement the diet anyway, for example with low-energy fiber-rich products such as alfalfa, bran, soaked beet pulp and possibly extra oil.
"The new feeding Concept" looks past the standard picture. For example, Equilin®, as the "tipper of the sector", has even received the Equestrian Supplier Award 2019 for this innovative concept, based on scientific research.
